What Are Talismans?

The word talisman ultimately comes from the ancient Greek τέλεσμα (télesma), meaning “completion,” “religious rite,” “consecration,” or “payment.” A talisman is an object imputed with religious or magical energies intended to protect, heal, or—in some cases—harm individuals for whom they are made. Talismans can be made in all sizes, but, very often, they are portable objects.

Though talismans fulfilling many of the same roles as amulets, there are two key differences:

• A Talisman is consecrated through prayer, meditation, chanting or other similar ritual actions.
• A talisman is not just something that is picked up from nature (like amulets), rather it combines the natural components, and the work of those who elaborate it, and the prayers/meditation done to consecrate it.
• For some cultures, amulets are considered to protect a person or possession against evil forces while a talisman is meant to attract good fortune, blessings, etc.

Some amulets, through prayer, meditation, or chanting can be made into talismans. Some other talismans consist of herbs or even a little piece of paper with a prayer put in a pouch and then is properly consecrated.
